Plant description:
Schisandra chinensis : It is known as Five Flavors Fruit (WU WEI ZI) in China. Berries (fruits) are used for therapeutic purpose. Fruits are globose, red and of different sizes. The skin and pulp of the fruit are sweet, sour, the kernels pungent and bitter; the whole has a salty taste.
Artemisia vulgaris : It is wildly distributed and cultivated in Kachin, Mandalay, Mon and Shan. The medicinal parts are the root and the above-ground part of the plant.
Stems are green or purple, bristly, thickened at the nodes. Leaves are opposite, subsessile, lanceolate-oblong denticulate. Flowers are white in axillary.
Emblica officinalis : It is highly nutritious and is an important dietary source of vitamin C, minerals and amino acids.
Pharmacological actions:
Schisandra chinensis : Major constituents include the lignans gomisin A, schizandirus and schizandrol. Extracts of the fruit have antiviral effect, liver protective effect, a helpful effect on some liver enzymes and an antioxidant effect.
Artemisia vulgaris : The aqueous extract significantly reduces the toxin-induced rise in plasma ALT and AST. That show improved architecture, decreased cellular swelling in mice with hepatitis.
Eclipta alba : The active ingredient is wedelolactone which can lower serum transminase level. It is a potent and selective 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor. The inhibition occurs via extremely aggressive oxygen radical scavenging. It is widely used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis.
Emblica officinalis : The herb exhibits antiviral actions and also protects the liver damage induced by carbon tetrachloride.
